My response to Wohlbergs Ten Reasons why the Sabbath is not Jewish

“Ten Reasons why the Sabbath is not Jewish”

Original post Authored by Steve Wohlberg

If I was a member of the SDA Church / organization I would be embarrassed for posts like this. Out of my curiosity did he consider how much this would offend a Jewish person with naming his article? Some how I don’t think he considered that possibility. After all the Torah is specific Saturday Sabbath was for Israel not we Gentiles.

Today (4-24-09) I found this post by a secretive SDA member. I always find it interesting that people like him post ideas like this and then bother to offer EG Whites books as stuff to sell from their ministry. Also note that they ally themselves with the “Amazing Facts” ministry / TV Show which is backed by the SDA organization.

At least with the authors website he isn’t trying to pull the usual “Thou art going to hell” speal for keeping Sunday…

His Theonomy list of ‘facts’…

“1) Adam and Eve were not Jewish. “God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it” (Genesis 2:3) before sin entered. “Sanctified” means “to be set apart for holy use.” The only ones in the Garden of Eden for whom the Sabbath was “set apart” were Adam and Eve, who weren’t Jewish.”

Yes Adam and Eve weren’t Jewish or any other religion for that matter. They actively had relationship with God. But the authors logic backfires. Where in Genesis does it say “Adam & Eve kept the Sabbath”? There was no Saturday Sabbath commandment till… Exodus 20:1-17.

So if Adam and Eve were not given specific commands by God to keep a Holy Day then his all Ten of these ‘reasons’ are meaningless.

“2) “The Sabbath was made for man.” Mark 2:27. Jesus said this. It was “made” in the Garden of Eden before it was “written” down on Mount Sinai. The Sabbath was “made” for “man,” not just Jews.”

Yet more bad theology or Theonomy.

Mark 2:23-28 Jesus gives us object lessons about the Jewish Sabbath. And in his ending monolog he says… “Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.” Jesus is mankinds rest not the Sabbath day. Was the Sabbath practiced in the garden of Eden in Genesis 2:1-25 or Genesis 3:1-24? I find no reference to prove the authors point.

“3) The other nine commandments are not “just for Jews.” God wrote “Ten Commandments” on stone, not just nine (See Deut. 4:12, 13; Ex. 20). Does “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” and “Do not bear false witness” apply only to Jews?”

Out of my curiosity WHERE in the Torah did God require not only the Ten Commandments but the rest of the Law of Moses for the Gentile? What this author is trying to do is make a moral comparison as if they only think that our lives are run simply off of the old Laws of Moses. We as Gentiles obtain morality from our New Testament and not the old Law of Moses. This also means that the author of this article prefers Theocracy than Christianity.

“4) “The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” Exodus 20:10. God calls the Sabbath, “my holy day.” Isaiah 58:13. The Bible never calls it “the Sabbath of the Jews.” It isn’t their Sabbath, but God’s.”

As I’m sure the author is aware when we look at the text of Exodus 20:1-17 and Exodus 31:12-18 we find that God was addressing the people of Moses (Israel). Since we donot live in a Jewish Theocratic society nor are we gentiles slaves of Jews this commandment only holds power over our Jewish friends and those Christian sects who are holding onto the spirit of Galatia.

As for Isaiah 58:13…

Isaiah 58:1-14 Is about delighting oneself in the Lord. Yet it was written to the Jewish people. So how is this meant for the gentiles?

“5) The Sabbath commandment is for the “stranger” too. The fourth commandment itself says the “stranger” is to rest on the Sabbath. Exodus 20:10. “Strangers” are non-Jews, or Gentiles. Thus the Sabbath applies to them too. Read also Isaiah 56:6.”

Exodus 20 again? Yeesshhhh talk about beating a dead horse. Exactly how are gentiles that live outside and around Jewish folk subject to this commandment? After all if the gentile persons or nations were required to live according to the Jewish 10 commandments God would have told us directly. But instead the bulk of the OT is God calling his Jewish people first. Steve read Exodus 31:12-18 WE ARENT ISRAEL DUDE!

As for Isaiah 56:1-12 we find something interesting Gods does call both the “Outcasts of Israel” (56:8) but also “Others” I can assume the many other nations around ancient Israel.

However let us note that there are MAJOR differences between the Jewish Sabbath and how the SDA Church keeps Sabbath. So how does the SDA organization is correct in its Sabbath keeping practices?

“6) Isaiah said Gentiles should keep the Sabbath. “Also the sons of the stranger … every one that keeps the Sabbath … for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.” Isaiah 56:6, 7. Thus the Sabbath is for Gentiles and “all people,” not just for Jews. “

I wonder if the author of this article noticed this…. “56:7 Even them will I bring to my Holy Mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer”

Oops it would appear the we gentiles according to the author’s logic have to go to the old Jewish Temple in Jerusalem Israel in order to properly keep the Sabbath.

7) “All” mankind will keep the Sabbath in the New Earth. In “the new earth … from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, says the Lord.” Isaiah 66:22, 23. Here God says that “all flesh” we will be keeping the Sabbath in “the new earth.” If this is the case – and it is – shouldn’t we start now?

Sigh*

I get such a good chuckle after this poor guys Theonomy philosophy. Let’s look at Isaiah 65:1-25, and 66:1-24 to see if his theories stand or fall.

When we look at:

Isaiah 65:1-25 we find that it is a prophecy towards the Jewish people. Father God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit will create a new world destroying the old one. (65:15)…

In Isaiah 66:1-24 we find in the future God will institute blessing upon the Jewish people and punishments upon their enemies. Those that turn to God in the future will be led to keep the Saturday Sabbath. (66:23)

These prophecies are for the future not now. What the author is doing is basing the scriptures to fit the theology of EG White and her fellows.

#8 Gentiles kept the Sabbath in the Book of Acts. “The Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath … Paul and Barnabas … persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.”‘ Acts 13:42, 43. Here saved-by-grace Gentiles kept the Sabbath (see also verse 44

I’m surprised the author of this article NEGLECTED to mention Acts 15:4-31…

Examples:

Acts 15:17-29

“And they wrote letters by them after this manner the apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.”

“Forasmuch as we have heard that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words subverting your souls saying YE MUST BE CIRCUMCISED AND KEEP THE LAW to whom we gave NO such commandment.”

“… (Verse 28) For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us to lay upon you NO greater burden that these necessary things.”

“THAT YE ABSTAIN FROM MEATS OFFERED TO IDOLS AND FROM BLOOD AND FROM THINGS STRANGLED AND FROM FORNICATION. From if ye keep ye shall do well.”

Yes Gentiles kept the Sabbath but only because they were bullied by Jewish believers at first. As anyone can read from the above the Disciples of Christ changed the ‘riles’ as it were.

“9) “The law” [of Ten Commandments] is for “all the world,” not just for Jews. Paul wrote these words. Read Romans 2:17-23; 3:19, 23.”

Romans 2:1-29 backfires on him the last sentence says…

“But he is a Jew which is one inwardly and the circumcision is that of the heart in the spirit AND NOT OF THE LETTER. Whose praise is not of men but of God.”

When we look at his next text we find Romans 3:1-31

Although he tries to justify his doctrine in verses 19 and 23 he again neglects the whole of the chapter. Notice the ending paragraphs 3:28-31

10) Luke was a Gentile who kept the Sabbath. Luke was the only Gentile who wrote any New Testament books (he wrote The Gospel According to St. Luke and The Acts of the Apostles). Luke traveled with Paul and wrote, “On the Sabbath we went out of the city by a river side.” Acts 16:13. It was the seventh-day Sabbath, the memorial of the creation (see Ex. 20:11). Both Luke and Paul knew it.

His only scripture to support his position is Acts 16:11-15? And yet one chapter before hand Acts 15:1-31 gave us the story of how the DISCIPLES of Christ decided with Gods blessing to NOT to enforce the ENTIRE Law of Moses. This includes Sabbath & circumcision on Gentile Christians and gave Gentile Christians guidelines to live Acts 16:13-20.

IF I bothered to contact Mr. Wohlberg I would ask him why Jesus did not COMMAND Sabbath keeping for his Gentile followers? And why Jesus told us that only TWO of the 613 Commandments of Moses were the most important.

Reference:

Matthew 22:36-40

Mark 12:29-31

Luke 10:25-28

Yes Jewish Christians likely Worshipped our unique God on Saturday Sabbath. And this same God is worshipped on Sunday by non Jews.

Mr. Wohlberg is welcome to Worship Father God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit on Saturday Sabbath according to Romans 14:4-6. But he and his fellow SDA Theonomists doesn’t need to kill my Faith by trying to make me doubt my choice of a day if rest or Worship.
