My reply to the ‘Ten Reasons why the Sabbath is not Jewish’ by Steve Wohlberg

Here is another example of how SDA persons get pretty strange to justify their doctrines.

“Ten Reasons why the Sabbath is not Jewish by Steve Wohlberg”

“1) Adam and Eve were not Jewish. “God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it” (Genesis 2:3) before sin entered. “Sanctified” means “to be set apart for holy use.” The only ones in the Garden of Eden for whom the Sabbath was “set apart” were Adam and Eve, who weren’t Jewish.”

“2) “The Sabbath was made for man.” Mark 2:27. Jesus said this. It was “made” in the Garden of Eden before it was “written” down on Mount Sinai. The Sabbath was “made” for “man,” not just Jews.”

“3) The other nine commandments are not “just for Jews.” God wrote “Ten Commandments” on stone, not just nine (See Deut. 4:12, 13; Ex. 20). Does “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” and “Do not bear false witness” apply only to Jews?”

“4) “The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” Exodus 20:10. God calls the Sabbath, “my holy day.” Isaiah 58:13. The Bible never calls it “the Sabbath of the Jews.” It isn’t their Sabbath, but God’s.”

“5) The Sabbath commandment is for the “stranger” too. The fourth commandment itself says the “stranger” is to rest on the Sabbath. Exodus 20:10. “Strangers” are non-Jews, or Gentiles. Thus the Sabbath applies to them too. Read also Isaiah 56:6.”

“6) Isaiah said Gentiles should keep the Sabbath. “Also the sons of the stranger … every one that keeps the Sabbath … for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.” Isaiah 56:6, 7. Thus the Sabbath is for Gentiles and “all people,” not just for Jews.”

“7) “All” mankind will keep the Sabbath in the New Earth. In “the new earth … from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, says the Lord.” Isaiah 66:22, 23. Here God says that “all flesh” we will be keeping the Sabbath in “the new earth.” If this is the case – and it is – shouldn’t we start now?”

“8) Gentiles kept the Sabbath in the Book of Acts. “The Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath … Paul and Barnabas … persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.”‘ Acts 13:42, 43. Here saved-by-grace Gentiles kept the Sabbath (see also verse 44).”

“9) “The law” [of Ten Commandments] is for “all the world,” not just for Jews. Paul wrote these words. Read Romans 2:17-23; 3:19, 23.”

“10) Luke was a Gentile who kept the Sabbath. Luke was the only Gentile who wrote any New Testament books (he wrote The Gospel According to St. Luke and The Acts of the Apostles). Luke traveled with Paul and wrote, “On the Sabbath we went out of the city by a river side.” Acts 16:13. It was the seventh-day Sabbath, the memorial of the creation (see Ex. 20:11). Both Luke and Paul knew it.”

Ok there are the authors opinions. Lets see if he is right. I will leave his statements in bold and my comments underthem unmarked.

It is true that Adam and Eve were not Jewish…

When we check Genesis 2:3 God rested on the Seventh day Sabbath. However notice something? WHERE are the commandments for Adam and Eve to KEEP the Sabbath? Exactly… there is no text showing us that Adam and Eve kept a day of rest by Commandment. So this authors ‘fact’ is in reality a opinion not Gods Commandment.

“2) “The Sabbath was made for man.” Mark 2:27. Jesus said this. It was “made” in the Garden of Eden before it was “written” down on Mount Sinai. The Sabbath was “made” for “man,” not just Jews.”

When we read Mark 2:23-28 we see that there is more than this author has posted the Text of the Word says in Mark 2:27 “And he said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.” The Sabbath was made to be a day of rest but it is up to us Gods creation to rest on that day or not. Again this is not a Commandment made by Jesus for Gentiles to keep Sabbath.

Herein is the theonomist moral argument. Yes murder, adultery, thievery, lying, lust are all breaking Gods Laws. And yet what does the Torah say? That the Law of Moses was for Israel. Not Israel and the gentiles.

In fact the first Ten of Gods commandments were still written for the peoples who followed Moses out of Egypt. These Ten Commandments didn’t apply originally to Israel’s neighbors.

Again this theonomist refuses to read the Text of Exodus 20:8-10 we donot follow Moses, we follow Jesus. In Isaiah 58:1-14  my KJV study Bible mentions that Isaiah 58 – 66 are prophecies concerning Israel. Again I argue that these have little to do with the Christian church.

Also notice that Isaiah 58 that God calls his Jewish followers to properly worship him.

As this theonomist forgets the term stranger written in Exodus 20:8-10 means those who lived in Jewish households and under a Jewish Theocracy. Since we Gentiles in the USA, Philippines, Europe and Canada etc donot live in Jewish households and our Governments are not theocracy’s. We of course are not under such a Commandment either by men or God.

Is this theonomist correct? Lets look at Isaiah 56:1-12. Hmmm if this Theonomist considers himself part of Israel than his statement would considered true. But again we are not under a Jewish or Sabbath keeper Theocracy. As I have already argued from the Texts of Exodus 20:1-17 we are not the people of Moses.

As we can read in Isaiah 65:1-25 and Isaiah 66:1-24 These prophecies deal with Gods future rule in a New Heavens and New Earth. Are Christians Commanded by Christ to keep Sabbath? No. IF God so chooses to lead both Jew and Gentile in his Spiritual kingdom to keep Sabbath as a day of rest and Worship I doubt no one will care.

Lets see what Acts has to say.

Acts 13:1-52 Paul’s first missionary journey to spread Jesus message. He did so to both Jew and Gentile in order to tell the world of Jesus Christ.

Acts 14:1-28 Paul continues his journey.

Acts 15:1-41 As we can read that Theonomist preachers attempted to say that if Christians didn’t keep the Law of Moses they could not be saved. What happens is that the Gentile Believers in Jesus are not commanded to keep the old laws of Moses.

As we can read in Acts 13, 14, 15 there is more to the story than Gentiles keeping the Saturday Sabbath.

“9) “The law” [of Ten Commandments] is for “all the world,” not just for Jews. Paul wrote these words. Read Romans 2:17-23; 3:19, 23.”

In reading Romans 2:11-29 we find that the SDA author is incorrect. The Law is still for those under Moses covenant. After all the Text clearly says… “For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the gentiles which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these having not the law, are a law unto themselves.”

Next in Romans 3:1-31 We see that this SDA author is again mistaken. Christians and Jews are Justified through faith without the deeds of the law.

Yes Luke and Paul kept the Sabbath. Yet is it commanded for Gentiles? Again NO. Keeping the Sabbath was part of the Jewishness of Paul. Luke kept the same day in accordance with keeping order within the new Church.

The disciples of Christ were willing to use ANY day to preach Christ. And they did so with great Joy in order to gather the Jew and Gentile into Jesus kingdom. How much more important to gather unbelievers into Gods kingdom than to argue a worship day.

In attempting to call his opinions ‘reasons’ for worship on Sabbath it should be noted that EG White considered the Saturday Sabbath part of SDA salvation. This of course has little to do with Christianity but the theonomist cult that people place themselves under when they join a SDA church or reform group.
